2 Chronicles 31:18

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And to the genealogie of all their litle ones, their wiues, and their sonnes, and their daughters, through all the congregation: for in their set office they sanctified themselues in holinesse. 2 Chronicles 31:18 (KJV)

To better understand the verse, let us examine its context. In 2 Chronicles 31 we find an account of King Hezekiah’s reforms in Judah. Hezekiah initiated a revival by restoring proper worship of God and cleansing the temple. As part of his reforms he reinstituted the Levitical priesthood and ensured that the priests were provided for through the tithes and offerings of the people.

The Levitical priesthood: verse 18 refers to the genealogy of the Levites, who were responsible for serving in the temple and conducting various religious duties. The passage mentions their little ones, wives, sons, and daughters, indicating that the Levites’ families were included in the provisions made for them. The community’s support extended to the entire Levite household, reflecting the inclusive nature of the provision.

Sanctification and holiness: the Levites sanctified themselves in holiness in their appointed service. Their set office required them to be set apart and dedicated to God’s work. Sanctification involves purifying oneself from sin, dedicating oneself to God’s service, and living in accordance with His commands. The verse highlights the Levites’ commitment to a holy lifestyle as they fulfilled their priestly duties.

Application: the passage teaches several valuable lessons. First, it emphasizes the importance of family and community in serving God. The Levites recognized the significance of supporting their families in their religious responsibilities, and we likewise should involve our families and support one another in our spiritual journeys. Second, it reminds us of the call to live in holiness, separating ourselves from worldly ways and reflecting our dedication to God in both public service and personal life. Finally, it underscores the need to fulfill our God‑given roles faithfully. Each believer has unique tasks within the body of Christ, and we should strive to carry them out with a heart devoted to God.
