The children of Immer, a thousand, fiftie and two. Ezra 2:37 (KJV)

The book of Ezra records the Israelites’ return from Babylonian captivity and their effort to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. Ezra 2:37 is part of a larger census of the returning exiles, listing families and the number of individuals from each clan.

The Children of Immer: Immer was a priestly family that played a significant role in the restoration of the temple. The descendants of Immer are mentioned in Ezra (Ezra 2:37; Ezra 10:20) and in Nehemiah (Nehemiah 7:40). Their presence among the returnees underscores the importance of priestly service in the renewed worship community.

Significance of Numbers: The verse records that 1,052 members of the Immer family returned. While biblical numbers sometimes carry symbolic meaning, here the figure primarily provides an accurate count of this group. It is worth noting that Nehemiah 7:40 lists the same group as “four hundred sixty and two,” indicating a discrepancy between the two records.

Priestly Lineage: Immer belonged to the sixteenth division of the priestly order established by King David (1 Chronicles 24:8, 24:14). The return of the children of Immer was therefore significant for re‑establishing the priestly service in the rebuilt temple.

Lessons and Application:

Faithful Remnant – The return of the children of Immer, together with other families, demonstrates the faithfulness of a remnant that desired to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple. It reminds believers of God’s faithfulness in preserving His people and fulfilling His promises, even amid exile.

Importance of Priestly Service – The inclusion of the Immer descendants highlights the need for spiritual leadership. Priests were essential for offering sacrifices, teaching the law, and guiding the people in their relationship with God.

Faithfulness in Counting – The precise count of the returning Immer family shows the care taken in recording names and numbers. This attention to detail encourages integrity and accuracy in our own record‑keeping and dealings.

Unity and Community – The extensive list in Ezra chapter 2 reveals a sense of unity among the returning exiles. Each family contributed to the restoration of Jerusalem and the temple, reminding us that God’s work often involves collaboration among diverse individuals and groups.

In conclusion, Ezra 2:37 records the children of Immer—1,052 individuals—who returned from Babylonian captivity. Their priestly lineage, the careful enumeration of their numbers, and the broader context of communal restoration offer valuable insights into God’s faithfulness, the significance of spiritual leadership, the importance of accurate record‑keeping, and the power of unity in accomplishing God’s purposes.
