Ezra 6:14
And the elders of the Iewes builded, and they prospered, through the prophecying of Haggai the Prophet, and Zechariah the sonne of Iddo, and they builded, and finished it, according to the commandement of the God of Israel, and according to the commandement of Cyrus and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia. Ezra 6:14 (KJV)
The book of Ezra recounts the events following the Babylonian exile when King Cyrus of Persia issued a decree allowing the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple. The Jewish people faced opposition during the rebuilding process, but with the intervention of the prophets Haggai and Zechariah they received encouragement and support. Ezra 6:14 marks the culmination of their efforts, as the elders of the Jews successfully completed the rebuilding of the temple.
Key Points:
Divine Prophesying – The elders of the Jews prospered in their building efforts through the prophesying of Haggai and Zechariah. These two prophets played a crucial role in inspiring and encouraging the people to continue their work. Their messages from God provided spiritual guidance, strength, and motivation, leading to the successful completion of the temple.
Obedience to God and Human Authority – The verse highlights that the rebuilding of the temple was carried out according to the commandments of both the God of Israel and the Persian kings Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes. The Jewish community recognized the authority of God and also respected the decrees and permissions granted by the foreign rulers, demonstrating obedience to both divine and earthly authorities.
God’s Sovereignty – Ezra 6:14 underscores God’s sovereignty in orchestrating the events and fulfilling His purposes. It was God who moved the heart of Cyrus to issue the decree allowing the Jews to return and rebuild the temple. Despite challenges and opposition, God’s plans prevailed, and the task was completed according to His command.
Lessons and Applications:
The Power of Prophetic Encouragement – The ministry of Haggai and Zechariah reminds us of the importance of prophetic voices in our lives. Their messages not only encouraged the community but also guided them in fulfilling God’s purposes. We should seek wise counsel from those who speak God’s truth and are sensitive to His leading.
Obedience to God and Human Authorities – The example of the Jewish people teaches us to honor and obey both divine and human authorities. While God’s commands are primary, respecting the laws and authorities that govern our lives positions us to receive blessings and favor from God.
Trusting in God’s Sovereignty – Ezra 6:14 reminds us that God is in control even amid challenging circumstances. When we align ourselves with God’s purposes and follow His guidance, He will bring about His plans. Trusting in His sovereignty enables us to persevere and overcome obstacles.
In conclusion, Ezra 6:14 portrays the successful completion of the temple rebuilding project by the Jewish people under the prophetic encouragement of Haggai and Zechariah. The passage emphasizes the importance of prophetic guidance, obedience to both divine and human authorities, and trust in God’s sovereignty, urging us to seek God’s will, listen to His messengers, and remain steadfast in obedience.
