Ezra 6:13

Then Tatnai, governor on this side the river, Shethar–boznai, and their companions, according to that which Darius the king had sent, so they did speedily.

Context

This verse sits within the book of Ezra, which records the return of the Jewish exiles and the rebuilding of the Jerusalem temple. Earlier, Tatnai, governor of the region west of the Euphrates, and his companion Shethar-boznai had questioned the Jews’ right to rebuild and wrote to King Darius to verify the matter (Ezra 5:6-17). The king searched the archives, found Cyrus’s original decree, and then sent a reply that ordered these officials to stay away from the work and to fund it from royal taxes (Ezra 6:6-12).

Meaning

The verse names Tatnai as governor “on this side of the river,” meaning the province Beyond the River. Shethar-boznai was another official in the Persian administration, and they had companions with them. The phrase “according to that which Darius the king had sent” shows they acted exactly as the king commanded. The words “so they did speedily” mean they obeyed at once and with full effort. Their swift action removed any further hindrance to the temple work. This prompt compliance was not merely formal; it was complete and diligent, matching the king’s explicit command.

Biblical connections

This event shows a clear change in the officials’ behavior. They had once opposed the Jews, but after receiving the king’s decree, they cooperated fully. This change did not happen by chance. God used the authority of a pagan king to protect His people and advance His purpose. The same truth appears in Ezra 6:14-15, where the elders of the Jews built and prospered through the prophesying of Haggai and Zechariah, and the temple was finished according to the command of God and the decree of Cyrus and Darius. The officials’ obedience made the temple construction possible, and our willing cooperation can help the work of God move forward. When we face opposition, we can pray for God to work in the hearts of leaders, knowing He is able to turn their decisions toward His purposes.

God’s purposes are never defeated by human resistance. The same officials who once questioned the Jews became instruments of their help. This verse encourages us to see that God works through all people, even those who seem to stand against His plans. Our part is to respond with faithful obedience and to trust that He will bring His work to completion. The swift obedience of these officials reminds us that God’s timing is often immediate when His will is clear.
