Ezra 5:7

Posted on 18 May at 15:22

“They sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto Darius the king, all peace.”

Context:The book of Ezra records the events following the Babylonian exile of the Israelites and their subsequent return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple. In the context of Ezra 5, the people of Judah, under the leadership of the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, had resumed the construction of the temple after a period of opposition and delay.

Verse Analysis:1. “They sent a letter unto him”: In this verse, “they” refers to the local officials of Samaria, who were part of the region known as Beyond the River. They sent a letter addressing the Persian king, Darius, who reigned after Cyrus the Great.

“Wherein was written thus”: The letter contained a message written by the officials, conveying their concerns and questions to the king.

“Unto Darius the king, all peace”: This phrase is a common greeting and form of respect in ancient letters. It expresses a desire for the recipient to experience peace and well-being.

Key Themes and Lessons:

Respectful communication:The officials of Samaria approached King Darius with a letter, demonstrating proper protocol and respect for their ruler. In our interactions with others, it is important to maintain respectful and appropriate communication, especially when addressing those in positions of authority.

Seeking guidance:The officials sent a letter to King Darius seeking his guidance and intervention in the situation. They recognized their need for support and assistance in the face of opposition. Similarly, we can approach God in prayer, seeking His guidance, wisdom, and intervention in our lives.

Peace:The greeting “all peace” highlights the desire for harmony and well-being. As followers of Christ, we are called to pursue peace in our relationships with others and to pray for the peace of our communities and the world.

Historical context:Understanding the historical context of this verse helps us appreciate the challenges faced by the Israelites during the rebuilding of the temple. It also highlights the influence of various political and regional factors on their journey.

  • Approach authority figures with respect and proper protocol, recognizing their roles and responsibilities.
  • Seek God’s guidance and intervention in challenging situations, knowing that He is our ultimate source of wisdom and help.
  • Strive to promote peace and harmony in our relationships and communities.
  • Study and understand the historical context of biblical events to gain deeper insights into the challenges faced by the people of God.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and chapters for a comprehensive understanding of the context and further insights into the book of Ezra.
