Ezra 7:28
“And hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king’s mighty princes. And I was strengthened as the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.”
Context:The book of Ezra is a historical account of the return of the Israelites from Babylonian captivity to Jerusalem. In this particular verse, Ezra, a scribe and priest, is reflecting on God’s favour upon him as he prepares to lead a group of Israelite exiles back to Jerusalem.
Key Themes:
- God’s Mercy:Ezra acknowledges God’s mercy in granting him favour before the king, his counsellors, and the mighty princes. Despite the difficult circumstances faced by the Israelites, God extended His mercy to Ezra, allowing him to find favour in the eyes of those in authority. This highlights God’s providence and His ability to work in the hearts of people for the benefit of His people.
- Divine Strength:Ezra recognises that the hand of the Lord his God was upon him, strengthening him for the task at hand. This verse reveals Ezra’s reliance on God’s power and guidance in fulfilling his mission. It demonstrates the importance of depending on God’s strength rather than relying on personal abilities or worldly resources.
- Gathering Chief Men:Ezra mentions that he gathered chief men to accompany him on the journey back to Jerusalem. This implies the need for wise and capable leaders to support and assist him in the work of rebuilding the temple and reestablishing the worship of God. It emphasises the significance of wise counsel and collaboration in carrying out God’s plans.
Application:
- Recognising God’s Mercy:Like Ezra, we should acknowledge and give thanks for the mercy and favour that God extends to us in various aspects of our lives. Even in challenging situations, we can trust that God’s mercy will be upon us as we seek His guidance and remain faithful to Him.
- Relying on God’s Strength:Just as Ezra relied on the strength of the Lord, we should recognise our dependence on God’s power and seek His empowerment in our lives. When facing obstacles or embarking on important endeavours, we can trust that God will provide the strength and wisdom we need to accomplish His purposes.
- Seeking Wise Counsel:Ezra understood the importance of gathering wise and capable leaders to support him in his mission. Likewise, we should value the wisdom and guidance of godly individuals in our lives. Seeking counsel from trusted mentors, pastors, or fellow believers can provide valuable insight and support as we navigate life’s challenges and pursue God’s plans.
Overall, Ezra 7:28 reminds us of the significance of God’s mercy, the need for divine strength, and the importance of wise counsel in fulfilling God’s purposes.
