Ezra 7:14

Forasmuch as thou art sent of the king, and of his seven counsellors, to enquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thine hand;

Context

Ezra was a priest and scribe skilled in the Law of Moses. King Artaxerxes I of Persia sent him to Jerusalem with a royal commission. This verse is part of a larger decree recorded in Ezra 7:11-26 that authorized Ezra to lead a return of exiles and oversee religious affairs. The king’s words show that Ezra’s mission was official and carried the full weight of the Persian court.

Meaning

The king and his seven counselors sent Ezra to inquire about Judah and Jerusalem. The seven counselors reflect a known Persian practice of having a privileged council, as seen in Esther 1:14. Ezra’s mission was to evaluate whether the people were obeying the law of God, which he carried in his hand. This phrase shows he had a copy of the Law and was recognized for his expertise in it. His inquiry was not casual; it was a careful examination of the community’s faithfulness.

Biblical connections

God’s purposes advanced through a pagan king’s decree, showing His sovereignty over nations. The law of God, the Torah given through Moses, served as the standard for the covenant relationship and for righteous living. This commission gave Ezra official authority to act on behalf of the king and his council.
