Ezra 8:12

Posted on 18 May at 15:22

“And of the sons of Azgad; Johanan the son of Hakkatan, and with him an hundred and ten males.”

Ezra 8:12 (KJV):

The book of Ezra describes the return of the Israelites from Babylonian captivity and the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. In this particular verse, Ezra is recording the names of the heads of households who returned with him from Babylon to Jerusalem.

Historical Context:

The verse mentions the sons of Azgad. Azgad was one of the families among the Israelite exiles who returned with Ezra. Johanan, the son of Hakkatan, is specifically mentioned along with a group of 110 males.

Sons of Azgad:

  • Sons of Azgad:

The number 110 represents the number of males from the family of Johanan who returned with Ezra. In ancient times, counting the males was a common way of taking a census and keeping track of the number of people in a group. The inclusion of this detail in the verse demonstrates the meticulousness of the record-keeping and the organised nature of the return from captivity.

Significance of the Number:

While this verse may not have a direct spiritual lesson, it reminds us of the importance of keeping records and details in the context of historical events. The meticulous recording of names and numbers in the Bible reflects the accuracy and reliability of God’s Word.

  • Application:

Though this verse does not contain specific instructions or commands for believers today, it reminds us of the significance of keeping records and preserving historical details. As Christians, we should value and appreciate the accuracy and historical reliability of the Bible, as it provides a foundation for our faith.
