Ezra 8:11

Posted on 18 May at 15:22

“And of the sons of Bebai; Zechariah the son of Bebai, and with him twenty and eight males.”

Context:The book of Ezra describes the return of the Jewish exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity. In chapter 8, Ezra organizes a group of people to accompany him on the journey from Babylon to Jerusalem. The verse in question is part of a list of those who volunteered to join Ezra.

The Sons of Bebai:The verse mentions Zechariah as the son of Bebai. Bebai was a family or clan among the returning exiles. The fact that Zechariah is specifically mentioned indicates his importance among the group.

Twenty-eight Males:In addition to Zechariah, there were twenty-eight other males from the Bebai family who volunteered to go with Ezra. This suggests that the Bebai family had a strong sense of commitment and willingness to contribute to the restoration of Jerusalem.

  • Unity and Collaboration:The willingness of the Bebai family to join Ezra and be part of the journey back to Jerusalem teaches us the importance of unity and collaboration in God’s work. They recognised the significance of being part of the restoration process and actively participated in it.
  • Willingness to Serve:The volunteers from the Bebai family demonstrate a spirit of service. They were not content with staying in Babylon but chose to embark on a challenging journey to contribute to the rebuilding of Jerusalem. Their example encourages us to be willing servants in God’s kingdom, ready to step out in faith and take part in His work.
  • Active Involvement:Like the Bebai family, we are called to actively participate in God’s work. Whether it’s through serving in our local church, supporting missions, or helping those in need, we should seek opportunities to contribute to the advancement of God’s kingdom.
  • Unity and Support:The Bebai family’s example reminds us of the importance of unity and support within the body of Christ. We should encourage and uplift one another, working together to fulfill God’s purposes, just as the Bebai family joined Ezra on the journey to Jerusalem.
  • Trust in God’s Faithfulness:As we step out in faith to serve God, we can trust in His faithfulness. Just as God was faithful in bringing the exiles back to Jerusalem, He will be faithful to guide and provide for us in our endeavours for His glory.
