Ezra 8:12

And of the sons of Azgad; Johanan the son of Hakkatan, and with him an hundred and ten males.

Ezra 8:12 (KJV)

Ezra 8 records the families that returned with Ezra from Babylon to Jerusalem. This verse names Johanan, son of Hakkatan, from the family of Azgad, with 110 males. The list shows careful record-keeping and the organized nature of the return. This census was part of God’s promise to restore Israel after exile.

The sons of Azgad were one of the Israelite families among the exiles. Johanan led this group, and the number 110 represents the men who traveled with him. Counting males was a common way to track a group’s size. This detail shows the accuracy and reliability of God’s Word. The number also indicates a significant but modest contingent, reflecting the obedience of these families in leaving Babylon.

The family of Azgad also appears in Ezra 2:15, showing continuity in the restoration community. Each family’s participation mattered for rebuilding the temple and reestablishing worship. This verse emphasizes the value of every person in God’s redemptive plan. The precise record of names and numbers highlights God’s attention to detail and His care for individuals within the covenant community.

Though this verse has no direct command, it reminds us to value accurate records and historical details. As Christians, we can trust the Bible’s precision as a foundation for faith. It also encourages us to see our own place in God’s ongoing work, knowing that even small contributions are vital. Every person counted contributed to the rebuilding of the temple and the reestablishment of worship.

Johanan’s leadership, though not detailed, shows the role of family heads in guiding households in obedience. The return from exile was a time of renewal and commitment to God’s law. This verse points to restoration and hope, reminding us that God cares for individuals within His covenant community. The listing of families demonstrates the importance of heritage and the transmission of faith across generations.
