Nehemiah 3:24

Listen to this article

“After him repaired Binnui the son of Henadad another piece, from the house of Azariah unto the turning of the wall, even unto the corner.”

Nehemiah is a book in the Old Testament that tells the story of Nehemiah, a Jewish cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes, who received permission to return to Jerusalem and rebuild its walls. Nehemiah’s task was challenging because the city walls had been destroyed, leaving the people vulnerable to attacks from enemies.

In Nehemiah 3, the chapter describes the reconstruction efforts of the wall around Jerusalem. It provides a detailed account of the various groups of people who worked together to rebuild specific sections of the wall. Verse 24 mentions a man named Binnui, the son of Henadad, who repaired another portion of the wall.

While this verse may seem brief and straightforward, it reveals several important lessons we can learn from Nehemiah’s story:

  • Cooperation and teamwork:The rebuilding of the wall was not a task accomplished by a single person but required the collaboration of many individuals. Binnui, along with others, contributed their efforts to complete the work. This emphasises the importance of unity and working together for a common purpose.
  • Faithfulness in small tasks:Binnui’s contribution might appear relatively insignificant compared to the overall project. However, he faithfully repaired his assigned portion of the wall, regardless of its size or prominence. This teaches us the value of faithfulness in the small tasks we are entrusted with, recognising that every role in God’s kingdom has significance.
  • Diligence and perseverance:Rebuilding the wall was a significant undertaking that required hard work and perseverance. Binnui, like others involved in the project, demonstrated diligence by fulfilling his responsibility. This teaches us the importance of perseverance in the face of challenges and the rewards of putting in consistent effort.
  • Obedience to God’s call:Nehemiah’s mission to rebuild the wall was not merely a human endeavour; it was initiated by God’s leading. Binnui’s participation in the project demonstrates his obedience to God’s call through Nehemiah. This reminds us of the importance of discerning and following God’s direction in our own lives.

Nehemiah 3:24 may seem like a small verse in the grand narrative, but it highlights significant principles such as unity, faithfulness, diligence, and obedience that are relevant to our lives as believers today. By applying these lessons, we can contribute to the building of God’s kingdom and accomplish great things for His glory.
