Nehemiah 3:23

Listen to this article

“After him repaired Benjamin and Hashub over against their house. After him repaired Azariah the son of Maaseiah the son of Ananiah by his house.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in Nehemiah 3 that describes the reconstruction of the walls of Jerusalem. In this chapter, Nehemiah provides a detailed account of the various individuals and groups who contributed to the restoration of the city’s walls. It emphasises the collaborative effort of the people in rebuilding Jerusalem’s defences.

In verse 23, three individuals are mentioned: Benjamin, Hashub, and Azariah. Benjamin and Hashub worked on the repair of the wall in front of their own house, indicating that they were likely responsible for the section of the wall adjacent to their residence. Azariah, the son of Maaseiah and the grandson of Ananiah, also repaired a section of the wall near his house.

These verses highlight the participation of different families and individuals in the restoration project. The fact that people worked on the section of the wall near their own dwellings reflects their personal investment in the reconstruction of Jerusalem’s defences. Each person took responsibility for their part in the larger endeavour, and this collective effort contributed to the successful completion of the wall.
