Nehemiah 10:7

Meshullam, Abijah, Mijamin,

Nehemiah 10:7 (KJV)

Nehemiah 10 records a covenant renewal ceremony after the Israelites returned from exile and rebuilt Jerusalem’s walls. The people gathered to reaffirm their commitment to God’s law and the covenant that bound them as a nation. Verse 7 lists three names: Meshullam, Abijah, and Mijamin. The surrounding list identifies these men as priests, as verse 8 concludes with “These were the priests.” Their names appear among many who sealed the covenant document, showing broad participation of temple personnel. This was a formal act of binding themselves to obedience.

The names carry meaning. Meshullam relates to a Hebrew root meaning “to be at peace” or “to be complete.” Abijah means “my father is Yahweh.” Mijamin is related to the Hebrew for “from the right hand” or “southward.” These names remind readers that each signer was a specific person with a heritage of faith.

The act of sealing the covenant was a serious, public commitment. By recording names, the passage highlights that covenant fidelity was expected of every segment of the community, from leaders to servants. The covenant was not merely a national event but involved the faithful participation of individuals.

The list of priests in Nehemiah 10:1-8 corresponds to the priestly divisions in Nehemiah 12:1, which records the priests who returned with Zerubbabel and Jeshua. This connection shows continuity of priestly service from the return from exile to the covenant renewal under Nehemiah.

For contemporary believers, this covenant renewal encourages regular examination of personal commitment to God’s Word. It urges believers to renew dedication to obeying His commandments, to involve the whole body of believers, and to seek divine direction in daily decisions. Each believer has a part in the community’s faithfulness.

The inclusion of these names demonstrates that God values personal accountability and public commitment. Each believer, like Meshullam, Abijah, and Mijamin, is called to stand for God’s precepts and to participate actively in the community of faith. Their example reminds us that our own commitments are seen and valued by God, and that faithful service, however small, contributes to the health of the whole church.
