Nehemiah 13:11

Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

Nehemiah 13:11 (KJV)

Nehemiah had returned to Jerusalem after a long absence. During that time, the Levites and singers who served in the temple had not received their portions, so they had left to work in their fields (Nehemiah 13:10). The temple, the central place of worship, had been abandoned. This neglect was not accidental; it came from a failure to keep the promise made earlier to support God’s house.

Nehemiah confronted the rulers, asking, “Why is the house of God forsaken?” These rulers were likely priests appointed over the temple chambers (Nehemiah 12:44). His question was a pointed rebuke, showing that the neglect came from failed leadership. He then gathered the people together and set them in their place, restoring the temple workers to their proper duties. His action was twofold: he rebuked the officials and restored the worship order.

This neglect broke the promise made in Nehemiah 10:37 to support the house of God. Nehemiah’s actions show that caring for God’s house includes providing for those who serve there. The verse also highlights the seriousness of spiritual decline that can creep in when leaders are not watchful.

Nehemiah’s example calls believers to examine their own hearts. When spiritual neglect appears, whether in personal life or in the community, it requires correction. Faithful leaders must confront complacency and take practical steps to restore worship. Supporting those who minister is a vital part of honouring God. Neglect of God’s work is a serious matter that demands action, not silence.

Neglect of God’s house is serious. Nehemiah did not ignore the problem or wait for others to act. He held leaders accountable and restored order. His determination reminds us that true reverence for God includes both worship and responsibility for His work. We too must ask if we are caring for God’s house and those who serve there.
