Nehemiah 10:37

Listen to this article

“And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage.”

Nehemiah was a Jewish leader and a governor of Jerusalem after the exile of the Israelites in Babylon. He played a significant role in the restoration of the city walls and the spiritual revival of the people. This verse is part of the covenant that the people made with God to follow His laws and regulations, including the proper handling of offerings and tithes.

Firstfruits and Offerings:The verse mentions bringing the firstfruits of their dough and offerings. In the Old Testament, the firstfruits were the initial portion of the harvest or the first produce of their labour. It was an act of giving the best and acknowledging that all blessings come from God. By offering the firstfruits, the people demonstrated their gratitude and dependence on God’s provision.

Fruit of all Manner of Trees, Wine, and Oil:Along with the firstfruits, the people were also instructed to bring the fruit of all kinds of trees, as well as wine and oil. This represents the produce of the land, including agricultural products such as grapes and olives. The people were to offer these as an expression of thanksgiving to God for the abundance of the land.

Tithes to the Levites:The verse also mentions the tithes of their ground, which were to be given to the Levites. The Levites were the priestly tribe designated by God to serve in the tabernacle and later the temple. They did not receive any land inheritance like the other tribes, so the tithes provided for their needs. The people were instructed to give a tenth of their produce to support the Levites, ensuring their provision as they dedicated themselves to God’s service.

Distribution to the Levites in All Cities:The tithes were to be distributed among the Levites in all the cities of the Israelites’ tillage or cultivated land. This ensured that the Levites, who were dispersed throughout the land, would receive support from the people. It was a way to sustain the Levites’ ministry and ensure their ability to carry out their religious duties.

Nehemiah 10:37 reflects the importance of honouring God with the firstfruits of one’s labour, giving offerings as an act of gratitude, and providing for the spiritual leaders who dedicated themselves to serving God. It emphasises the principles of giving, generosity, and stewardship, reminding the Israelites to prioritise God and His work in their lives. Though the specifics of this verse may not directly apply to Christians today, the underlying principles of giving and supporting God’s work are still relevant in the context of the New Testament teachings on stewardship and generosity.
