Nehemiah 13:12

Posted on 18 May at 15:21
Listen to this article

“Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries.”

Context: Nehemiah is one of the books in the Old Testament, specifically categorised as a historical book. It recounts the story of Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes, who was granted permission to return to Jerusalem to rebuild its walls and restore the city. Nehemiah’s mission was to rebuild not only the physical infrastructure but also the spiritual and moral condition of the people.

Historical Background: During Nehemiah’s time, the people of Israel had strayed from following God’s commandments and had neglected the temple and its services. One of the crucial aspects they had overlooked was the giving of tithes and offerings, which were essential for the support of the priests and Levites who served in the temple. The tithe referred to in Nehemiah 13:12 is the tenth part of their produce, which the people were to bring as an offering to the treasuries of the temple.

The Importance of Tithing: Tithing was a practice that God established in the Old Testament for the Israelites. It served multiple purposes, including supporting the Levites who were responsible for the temple service, aiding the poor, and acknowledging God’s ownership and provision. The tithe consisted of various agricultural products, such as corn, new wine, and oil, as mentioned in Nehemiah 13:12.

The Faithful Response of the People: In Nehemiah 13:12, we see that the people of Judah responded positively to Nehemiah’s leadership and the reestablishment of the importance of tithing. They brought the tithe of their crops, specifically corn, new wine, and oil, to the treasuries of the temple. This demonstrates their obedience to God’s commandments and their willingness to support the work of the temple and its ministers.

  • Faithful stewardship: The people’s response in bringing their tithes teaches us the importance of faithful stewardship over the resources God has given us. Just as the Israelites were expected to bring their tithes, we are called to give generously and faithfully to support the work of God’s kingdom.
  • Obedience to God’s commands: The people’s obedience in tithing reminds us of the significance of following God’s instructions. Tithing was an act of worship and an acknowledgement of God’s provision. When we obey God’s commands, we honour Him and demonstrate our trust in His faithfulness.
  • Supporting ministry and the poor: Tithing was not only about the sustenance of the Levites but also about caring for those in need. As we faithfully give, we contribute to the ministry of the Church and extend a helping hand to those who are less fortunate.

Overall, Nehemiah 13:12 highlights the significance of tithing as an act of worship, stewardship, and obedience. It encourages us to faithfully support the work of God’s kingdom and remember the importance of caring for those in need.
