Job 24:1
Why, seeing times are not hidden from the Almighty, do they that know him not see his days?
Job 24:1 (KJV)
Context
Job speaks after his friends insist that the wicked are soon punished. He sees the opposite: the unjust often prosper and escape visible judgment. His question challenges that simple view.
Meaning
Job affirms that “times are not hidden from the Almighty.” God knows every event, past, present, and future. Yet knowing does not mean acting immediately. Job wonders why those who know God do not see His day of judgment. The timing of that day remains hidden from people, set by God’s own authority. This is not a denial of God’s care but a deep expression of the tension between God’s sovereignty and the apparent delay of justice.
Biblical connections
Scripture confirms that God knows all times (Acts 15:18) and that He has fixed the seasons by His own power (Acts 1:6-7). These passages clarify that God’s knowledge is complete, but His appointed times are not revealed to humans. The delay of justice does not mean it will never come. The day of judgment is certain, though its timing is hidden even from angels.
Application
Believers face the same tension today. When wrong seems to win, we may doubt God’s care. Job’s words call us to trust God’s wisdom and timing, not to demand immediate vindication. We live in patient endurance, knowing that God’s purposes are perfect. This hope frees us from both presumption and despair.
Reflection
God is not hidden from the world’s affairs, though His ways are often beyond our understanding. Our hope rests not in seeing swift justice, but in the certainty of His ultimate justice. That certainty calls us to align our perspective with God’s eternal timetable, living in anticipation of that day.
