Job 32:15
They were amased, they answered no more, they left off speaking. Job 32:15 (KJV)
This verse is part of the profound narrative of Job, a righteous man who endured immense trials. In Job 32:15 we encounter Elihu, a younger observer of the debate between Job and his friends, expressing astonishment at their inability to answer Job’s questions. Elihu had been listening from the beginning of the discourse (Job 32:1‑5) and remained silent because, being younger, he felt it improper to speak before the elders (Job 32:6‑7). As he heard the ineffective arguments of Job’s friends, his frustration grew, and he sensed that the Spirit within him was urging him to speak.
In the preceding verses (Job 32:8‑14) Elihu explains that he has been waiting for the right moment and now feels compelled by the Spirit to share his perspective, emphasizing that age does not guarantee wisdom and that God grants understanding to all. Verse 15 marks the beginning of Elihu’s own address to Job and his companions. Rather than merely describing the friends’ speechlessness, the verse opens Elihu’s speech, serving as a transition that introduces his distinct voice into the dialogue.
The friends’ words have ceased because they have run out of arguments and are left in a state of speechlessness. This silence highlights their failure to respond adequately to the depth of Job’s suffering and his quest for answers. Elihu believes he has wisdom to share, and the verse serves as a transition point that introduces him as a new voice in the ongoing conversation. In the subsequent chapters Elihu proceeds to present his thoughts and insights to Job and the other speakers, offering an alternative perspective on Job’s situation and seeking to provide a fresh understanding of suffering and divine justice.
