Psalms 5:5

“The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.”

Psalm 5:5 (KJV):

“The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.”

Context:It is important to understand the context of this verse to gain a deeper understanding of its meaning. Psalm 5 is attributed to King David, and it is a morning prayer seeking God’s guidance and protection from enemies. The psalm reflects David’s trust in God’s righteousness and justice.

The Foolish:The term “foolish” in this verse refers to those who act foolishly or wickedly, rejecting God’s wisdom and ways. In the biblical context, a fool is not someone lacking intellectual capacity, but rather someone who rejects God and lives in opposition to His commands.

Not Standing in God’s Sight:The phrase “shall not stand in thy sight” indicates that the foolish ones will not be able to remain in God’s presence or receive His favour. It emphasises the separation between those who follow God’s ways and those who choose a path of wickedness.

Hatred of Workers of Iniquity:The verse states that God “hatest all workers of iniquity.” While God is love (1 John 4:8) and desires all people to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9), He also hates sin and evil. Here, “workers of iniquity” refers to those who actively engage in sinful behaviour and deliberately choose to oppose God’s righteousness.

A Lesson in God’s Holiness and Justice:This verse reminds us of God’s holiness and His righteous judgment against sin. God, being perfectly holy, cannot tolerate or overlook wickedness. He will eventually judge all evil and hold the unrepentant accountable for their actions. This verse serves as a warning and a reminder of the consequences of choosing a path of iniquity.
