Thou shalt destroy them that speake leasing: the Lord will abhorre the bloodie and deceitfull man. Psalms 5:6 (KJV)

Psalm 5 is attributed to King David and is classified as a morning prayer. In this psalm David seeks God’s guidance and protection from his enemies, and he places his confidence in the Lord’s perfect justice. The verse under study expresses David’s trust that God will judge and punish those who practice falsehood, violence, and deceit.

The phrase “speak leasing” refers to speaking lies or falsehood. David acknowledges that God will ultimately bring destruction upon those who engage in deceitful speech. Because God is perfectly just, He detests falsehood and holds accountable anyone who practices it. The promise that the Lord will destroy such speakers underscores the seriousness with which God regards truth and integrity.

“The LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.” The term “bloody” can refer to those who shed innocent blood or who engage in violent acts. “Deceitful” describes individuals who are dishonest or crafty in their actions. David affirms that God not only detests falsehood but also has a strong aversion to those who commit acts of violence and engage in deceitful practices. The combined declaration therefore presents a two‑fold condemnation: first against the spoken lies that corrupt the community, and second against the violent, treacherous behavior that harms the innocent.

In the broader context of Psalm 5, this verse reinforces the psalmist’s reliance on divine protection. By invoking God’s hatred of the bloody and deceitful, David reminds believers that God’s moral order will ultimately prevail, and that those who persist in lying, bloodshed, and deceit will face divine judgment. The passage calls the faithful to trust in God’s righteous judgment while urging them to distance themselves from falsehood and violence, aligning their lives with the character of a holy and just God.
