“Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies’ sake.”

Sure! Let’s do a Bible study on Psalm 6:4, as found in the King James Version (KJV). Psalm 6 is a penitential psalm written by King David, expressing his deep anguish and distress. Let’s explore the verse and its surrounding context to gain a better understanding.

Psalm 6:4 (KJV) says:

“Return, O Lord, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies’ sake.”

In this verse, David cries out to the Lord for deliverance and salvation. He acknowledges his need for God’s mercy and pleads for His intervention. Let’s delve into the larger context of the psalm to grasp its meaning fully.

Psalm 6 begins with David’s desperate plea to God for mercy and healing, as he is overwhelmed by physical and emotional suffering. He expresses his anguish and begs for God’s compassion, saying in verses 1-3:

“O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger,

neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak:

O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed.

My soul is also sore vexed:

but thou, O Lord, how long?”

In these opening verses, David recognizes the severity of his situation and pleads with God not to punish him in anger but to show mercy. He acknowledges his weakness and physical distress, asking for divine healing. David’s soul is deeply troubled, and he questions how long he will have to endure this suffering.

Then, in verse 4, the focus shifts to David’s petition for God’s return and salvation. He implores the Lord, saying, “Return, O Lord, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies’ sake.” Here, David longs for God’s presence and intervention in his life. He seeks deliverance and salvation, not based on his own merits, but for the sake of God’s mercies.

The phrase “Return, O Lord” suggests that David feels a sense of distance or separation from God, possibly due to his afflictions. David desires a restoration of his relationship with God, yearning for His comforting and guiding presence.

David’s plea for deliverance reflects his faith in God’s ability to rescue him from his troubles. He seeks salvation, recognizing that it is ultimately God’s mercies that can save him. This verse demonstrates David’s humble reliance on God’s grace rather than any personal merit.

The psalm continues with David expressing his trust in God’s faithfulness and anticipates the defeat of his enemies. He ends the psalm with a note of assurance and praise, declaring his confidence in God’s response to his prayer.

Overall, Psalm 6:4 (KJV) portrays David’s heartfelt cry for deliverance and salvation in the midst of his suffering. It highlights his reliance on God’s mercy and his firm belief that God’s intervention is the source of true rescue and restoration.
