Psalms 8:9

O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

Psalms 8:9 (KJV)

Psalm 8 is a song of praise attributed to King David. It begins and ends with the same declaration of God’s glory, forming a frame around the whole psalm. This closing verse repeats the opening words, reminding readers that everything between them—the heavens, the moon, the stars, and humanity’s place in creation—serves to display God’s greatness.

The psalmist addresses God with a double title: “O LORD our Lord.” The first name, LORD, is Yahweh, the covenant name God revealed to Israel. The second, Lord, is Adonai, meaning Master or Sovereign. Together they show that God is both the eternal God who keeps His promises and the personal Master who rules over His people. In Hebrew thought, a name reveals character and reputation. To call God’s name excellent is to declare that His nature, power, and deeds are majestic and worthy of honor.

The phrase “in all the earth” widens the praise beyond Israel. God’s glory is not limited to one nation or one temple. Every land and every people can see evidence of His handiwork, and His name deserves praise everywhere. The verse also carries a personal note: God is not only Lord in general, but “our Lord.” He enters into a relationship with His people, and they may call Him theirs.

This verse forms an inclusio with Psalm 8:1, where the same words open the psalm. The repetition binds the whole psalm together and stresses that human dignity and dominion, described in the middle verses, exist for God’s glory. The New Testament later applies Psalm 8 to Jesus Christ, showing that the Son of God fulfills the role of the exalted man who rules over creation. That connection deepens the meaning of God’s excellent name, for in Christ God’s character and saving work are revealed to the ends of the earth.

Believers today can respond to this verse in several ways:

  • Worship God for who He is, not only for what He gives. His name itself is excellent and deserves praise.

  • Submit to His lordship. Calling Him “our Lord” means surrendering our will to His authority and trusting His ways.

  • Proclaim His name to others. Since His glory fills the earth, we are invited to join in making His name known through our words and actions.

  • Reflect His excellence in daily life. Our conduct should honor the God we serve and display His character to those around us.

This verse calls us to pause and consider the majesty of God. The same God who set the stars in place also draws near to us as “our Lord.” His name is excellent in all the earth, and we have the privilege of knowing Him personally. Let that truth shape our worship, our obedience, and our witness each day.
