“The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.”

Psalm 9:16 (KJV):

“The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.”

Context and Background:Psalm 9 is a psalm of David, expressing praise and thanksgiving to God for His righteous judgments and deliverance. It is a song that reflects on God’s sovereignty, justice, and protection. In verse 16, David acknowledges that the Lord is known and recognized through His acts of judgment and justice.

God is Known by His Judgment:The verse begins by stating, “The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth.” This statement highlights an important aspect of God’s character. Throughout the Bible, we see that God reveals Himself through His acts of judgment, both in punishing the wicked and delivering the righteous. The judgments of God display His righteousness, holiness, and sovereignty over all creation.

The Wicked are Snared in Their Own Works:The verse continues, “the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands.” This statement emphasizes the principle of divine retribution. The wicked often fall into the traps they set for others, and their own evil deeds lead to their downfall. It’s a reminder that God’s justice operates in the world, ensuring that the wicked ultimately face the consequences of their actions.

Higgaion and Selah:The terms “Higgaion” and “Selah” are musical notations that occur in the Psalms. While their exact meanings are uncertain, they likely indicate pauses or musical interludes in the psalm. They serve to emphasize and allow for reflection on the preceding statement.
