Psalms 9:16
The Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.
Psalms 9:16 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 9 is a song of David, giving thanks to God for His righteous judgments and deliverance. In this verse, David declares that the Lord makes Himself known through the justice He carries out. The surrounding verses show the wicked falling into the very pits they dug for others.
Meaning
The first part, “The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth,” teaches that God reveals His character through His acts of justice. His judgments display His holiness, wisdom, and power over all creation. The second part, “the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands,” shows that evil people often get caught in their own schemes. Their downfall is not only divine punishment but also the natural result of their own deeds. God’s justice is not arbitrary; it reflects His wisdom and goodness.
Biblical connections
This truth echoes Psalm 9:15, where the nations sink in the pit they made. It also connects with Exodus 9:16, where God tells Pharaoh that He raised him up to show His power and declare His name throughout the earth. God’s judgment makes His name known, and it also points to the ultimate vindication of the righteous and the humbling of the proud.
Application
Believers can trust God’s justice even when the wicked seem to prosper for a time. Human plans against the righteous will eventually fail. This verse calls for humility and reliance on God, knowing He will right every wrong. It also warns that sin carries its own consequences, so we should examine our own hearts and avoid setting traps for others.
Reflection
The words “Higgaion” and “Selah” are musical notes that invite a pause for deep thought. They urge readers to meditate on God’s justice and let it shape their faith and conduct. Pausing to consider these truths strengthens trust in the God who judges rightly.
