Psalms 10:4

Listen to this article

“The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.”

Psalm 10:4 (KJV) says: “The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.”

Context: The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic and lyrical songs, prayers, and expressions of praise and worship. It was written by various authors, including King David. Psalm 10 is considered a lament or complaint psalm, where the psalmist expresses his distress over the actions and attitudes of the wicked.

The wicked and their pride: The verse begins by describing the wicked person as someone who exhibits pride through the expression on their face or countenance. This pride manifests as a refusal to seek after God or acknowledge His presence and authority. The wicked person’s arrogance and self-sufficiency blind them to the need for a relationship with God.

Rejecting God’s presence: The verse goes on to say that God is not in all the thoughts of the wicked. This means that the wicked person does not consider God, His ways, or His commandments in their thinking or decision-making. They live their lives as if God does not exist or is irrelevant, choosing their own path without regard for God’s will.

Insights and lessons: a. Pride as a barrier to seeking God: The verse highlights the detrimental role of pride in a person’s relationship with God. When pride takes root in our hearts, it hinders us from seeking and acknowledging God. Pride can lead to self-reliance, an inflated sense of importance, and a refusal to submit to God’s authority.

b. The consequences of neglecting God: By ignoring God and failing to consider Him in their thoughts, the wicked miss out on the blessings, guidance, and wisdom that come from a relationship with Him. They rely solely on their own limited understanding, which can lead to destructive choices and a lack of fulfillment.

c. The invitation to seek God: While this verse describes the wicked’s refusal to seek after God, it also implies an invitation for us to actively seek Him. As believers, we are called to humble ourselves, recognizing our need for God and actively pursuing a relationship with Him. Seeking God involves turning our hearts toward Him, seeking His guidance, studying His Word, and spending time in prayer and fellowship with Him.

d. The importance of keeping God in our thoughts: The verse challenges us to consider whether God is truly in all our thoughts. It encourages us to cultivate a mindset that acknowledges God’s presence and seeks to align our thoughts with His truth. By intentionally keeping God at the center of our minds, we can live in a way that pleases Him and allows Him to guide our actions.

Overall, Psalm 10:4 highlights the destructive nature of pride and the consequences of neglecting God in our lives. It calls us to humble ourselves, seek God diligently, and strive to keep Him at the forefront of our thoughts and decisions.
