Psalms 17:5
“Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.”
Psalm 17:5 (KJV) says: “Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.”
Context: Psalm 17 is attributed to King David and is categorised as a prayer for deliverance from enemies. In this particular verse, David is seeking God’s guidance and protection, asking Him to establish his steps on the right path and keep him from stumbling.
Seeking God’s Guidance: David begins by acknowledging his reliance on God. By using the phrase “hold up my goings,” he acknowledges his need for divine assistance in directing his steps. It demonstrates David’s awareness that he cannot successfully navigate life on his own; he needs the guidance and intervention of God.
God’s Paths: David recognises that God has established specific paths or ways for His people. These paths represent God’s will, righteousness, and the way of life that leads to blessing and fulfilment. By asking God to hold up his goings in these paths, David desires to remain steadfast and unwavering in his commitment to follow God’s ways.
Protection from Stumbling: David’s plea for his footsteps not to slip highlights his understanding of the challenges and temptations that may cause him to deviate from God’s paths. He desires to remain on the right path and asks God for assistance in avoiding stumbling, both physically and spiritually. David seeks the strength and support necessary to walk securely and with confidence.
- Psalm 17:5 reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s guidance and protection in our lives. Just as David acknowledged his need for God’s intervention, we should humbly recognise our dependence on God’s direction and wisdom. When we surrender our paths to Him and commit to following His ways, we can trust that He will uphold us and keep us from stumbling.
Additionally, this verse teaches us the significance of being watchful and discerning concerning the temptations and challenges that may lead us astray. Through prayer and reliance on God’s strength, we can navigate life’s difficulties and remain faithful to His path.
