Psalms 18:18
They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the Lord was my stay.
Psalms 18:18 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 18 is a song of thanksgiving from King David. He wrote it after God delivered him from his enemies, including King Saul. The same song appears in 2 Samuel 22, where this line is verse 19. David composed it during a time of great danger, and it shows his complete trust in God’s protection.
Meaning
In the King James Version, the word “prevented” does not mean “stopped.” It means “came before” or “confronted unexpectedly.” David’s enemies attacked him before he could prepare. They came upon him suddenly, in the day of his calamity, when he was most vulnerable. Modern translations say “confronted me” or “came upon me.“
The phrase “day of my calamity” points to a specific time of great distress or crisis. For David, this could refer to the attempts on his life by Saul or other enemies. He was in imminent danger and had no human help.
The word “stay” means a support or prop, something that holds a person up. David declares that the Lord was his stay. God upheld him and gave him stability when everything else failed. The Hebrew word for “stay” carries this idea of a firm support. This shows that God is not distant in trouble; He is near and actively sustaining His servant.
Biblical connections
This verse shows a pattern in David’s life: his enemies took advantage of his weakness, but God’s deliverance was greater. The same song in 2 Samuel 22:19 repeats this truth. It reminds us that God is present and reliable in distress, providing strength when human help fails. Throughout the Psalms, God is called our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Application
Calamity and opposition may come unexpectedly, even when we are vulnerable. Difficult times test our faith and make us realise our dependence on God. Like David, we can find stability in God, who is our refuge and strength.
God is the one who sustains us and provides the support we need to overcome adversity.
We can trust in God’s faithfulness and seek refuge in Him during challenging circumstances.
Reflection
Just as David found comfort and deliverance in God, we too can rely on Him to be our source of strength and help in times of need. The Lord is our stay, the one who holds us up when we cannot stand alone. In our darkest moments, He remains faithful and near.
