“For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.”

Certainly! Let’s dive into a Bible study on Psalm 18:21 from the King James Version (KJV). The verse reads:

This verse is part of a psalm attributed to King David, a beloved figure in the Bible. Psalm 18 is a reflection of David’s experiences and praises God for His deliverance from enemies and His faithfulness.

In Psalm 18:21, David declares his commitment to walking in the ways of the Lord and testifies that he has not wickedly departed from his God. This verse highlights two important aspects that we can explore further: the ways of the Lord and departing from God wickedly.

1. Keeping the ways of the Lord: David acknowledges that he has kept or observed the ways of the Lord. “The ways of the Lord” refer to God’s commandments, principles, and instructions for righteous living as revealed in His Word. It implies David’s dedication to following God’s will and living according to His standards. Keeping God’s ways involves obedience, trust, and a desire to please Him.

2. Not wickedly departing from God: David affirms that he has not wickedly departed from his God. This phrase indicates David’s commitment to avoiding sinful behaviour or turning away from God’s path. It reflects his desire to remain faithful and loyal to God, maintaining a steadfast relationship with Him. David acknowledges that departing from God wickedly leads to spiritual deterioration and separation from Him.

In studying this verse, we can draw some key lessons:

  • 1. Obedience and faithfulness: David’s statement underscores the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God. It reminds us that following God’s ways and remaining committed to Him are essential in our relationship with Him.
  • 2. Intentional choices: David’s affirmation of not wickedly departing suggests that our relationship with God requires intentional choices. It calls us to examine our hearts and actions, making a conscious decision to avoid sin and walk in righteousness.
  • 3. God’s faithfulness: David’s testimony in this verse also highlights God’s faithfulness to His covenant. Despite human failings and temptations, God remains steadfast. David’s experience of deliverance from enemies serves as a reminder of God’s unwavering protection and provision.
