Psalms 18:21
For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
Psalms 18:21 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 18 is a song of thanks from King David after God rescued him from his enemies and from the hand of Saul. In this verse, David speaks plainly about his own conduct. He is not boasting before people, but testifying before God about the way he has walked.
Meaning
When David says, “I have kept the ways of the LORD,” he means that he has followed the path God has set for His people. “The ways of the Lord” are not God’s own hidden plans, but the commandments and instructions He has given for righteous living. David has observed them with care and obedience.
The second part, “and have not wickedly departed from my God,” shows his resolve. To depart wickedly means to turn away from God in rebellion and sin. David affirms that he has not done this. His relationship with God has remained steady, not because he was perfect, but because he refused to abandon his God.
Biblical connections
This testimony agrees with the wider teaching of Scripture. In 1 Samuel 13:14, God calls David a man after His own heart. David’s words here show what that kind of heart looks like: a heart that values God’s ways and turns from wickedness. His confidence rests on God’s faithfulness to His covenant, not on human perfection.
Application
David’s example calls us to examine our own walk with God. Keeping God’s ways is not a one-time decision but a daily choice. We must intentionally avoid sin and choose righteousness, relying on God’s strength to remain faithful. This verse also reminds us that God rewards integrity and faithfulness, even when we face trials.
Obedience and faithfulness are essential in our relationship with God.
Our relationship with God requires intentional choices to avoid sin and walk in righteousness.
God remains faithful to His covenant, providing protection and deliverance to those who trust Him.
Reflection
David’s testimony is a model of confident faith. He could speak boldly because his life was marked by devotion to God’s commands. We too can have such confidence when we sincerely seek to follow God. Let us ask God to give us hearts fully devoted to Him, so that we may walk in His ways and never wickedly depart from Him.
