“They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.”

Verse: “They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.” (Psalm 20:8, KJV)

Context: Psalm 20 is a prayer for victory and protection. It is attributed to King David and was likely used as a prayer before going into battle. The psalm begins with a plea for God’s response in times of distress and ends with an expression of confidence in God’s deliverance.

God’s power over adversaries: In the preceding verses, the psalmist acknowledges that some trust in chariots and horses, but the people of God trust in the name of the Lord their God. This verse begins with the declaration that their adversaries have been brought down and fallen. It indicates that those who oppose the people of God will ultimately be defeated by God’s power.

Rising and standing upright: The psalmist contrasts the fate of their enemies with the position of the people of God. While their adversaries have fallen, they declare, “but we are risen, and stand upright.” This statement expresses the confidence and assurance the psalmist has in the protection and victory granted by God.

Spiritual significance: This verse can be understood on both a literal and spiritual level. In a literal sense, it refers to the defeat of physical enemies and the subsequent victory of the people of God. On a spiritual level, it speaks to the broader theme of God’s deliverance and salvation. It points to the fact that those who place their trust in God can overcome any adversity and rise above their circumstances.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s power: The verse reminds us that our ultimate trust should be in the power and faithfulness of God rather than in human strength or resources. God has the ability to bring down our enemies and grant us victory in various situations of life.
  • Confidence in God’s deliverance: Just as the psalmist confidently declares their rising and standing upright, we should also have faith in God’s deliverance. Even when faced with challenges or opposition, we can trust that God will lift us up and enable us to stand firm.
  • Resilience and perseverance: This verse encourages us to persevere and remain steadfast in our faith. Despite the setbacks and falls we may experience, we can rise again with God’s help. It reminds us that we serve a God who can restore us and set us on our feet again.

In summary, Psalm 20:8 (KJV) highlights the contrast between the fate of the adversaries and the position of the people of God. It emphasizes the trust we should place in God’s power, the confidence we can have in His deliverance, and the resilience to rise and stand upright with His help.
