Listen to this article

“They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.”

Verse: “They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.”

Context: Psalm 22 is a Messianic psalm attributed to King David. It contains both expressions of distress and lament, as well as expressions of trust and praise. This psalm is quoted in the New Testament, specifically in Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34, when Jesus was on the cross.

Crying out to God: The verse begins by stating, “They cried unto thee.” Throughout the Bible, we see numerous instances where people cried out to God in their distress and were delivered. This verse emphasizes the importance of turning to God in prayer during times of trouble. It implies that those who cry out to God with sincere hearts can expect to be heard and rescued.

Trusting in God: The verse continues, “They trusted in thee.” Trusting in God is an essential aspect of the believer’s relationship with Him. It involves acknowledging God’s faithfulness, power, and sovereignty. Trusting in God means relying on Him completely, knowing that He is capable of providing, protecting, and guiding us. It is an act of surrendering our own control and putting our confidence in God’s plans and purposes.

Deliverance and not being confounded: The verse concludes, “And were not confounded.” This means that those who cried out to God and trusted in Him were not put to shame or disappointed. God’s deliverance is often a recurring theme in the Psalms. He has the power to rescue His people from their troubles and to bring about victory over their enemies. When we put our trust in God, we can have confidence that He will act on our behalf and bring about a favourable outcome.

  • This verse encourages us to approach God in prayer during times of distress and difficulty. We can cry out to Him with our burdens, knowing that He hears us and is willing to help.
  • It reminds us of the importance of trust in our relationship with God. Even when circumstances seem overwhelming, we can trust in His character and His promises.
  • The verse assures us that when we seek God’s intervention and place our trust in Him, we will not be confounded or put to shame. God’s deliverance may not always look the way we expect, but we can have confidence that He is working for our ultimate good.

Overall, Psalm 22:5 teaches us the importance of crying out to God, trusting in Him, and experiencing His deliverance. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness and encourages us to place our full reliance on Him in every situation.
