“Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.”

Psalm 22:4 (KJV) says: “Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.”

Context: Psalm 22 is a psalm of David that begins with a cry of anguish but ultimately ends in praise and confidence in God’s deliverance. This psalm is often referred to as a Messianic psalm, as it contains several prophetic references to the sufferings and triumph of the Messiah.

Trust in God: The verse highlights the theme of trust in God, drawing on the faith of the fathers. It emphasizes that previous generations had trusted in God and experienced His deliverance. This trust is a key element of the Israelite faith, as well as in the lives of believers today.

Continuity of Faith: The reference to “our fathers” suggests a sense of continuity and shared heritage in faith. By acknowledging the trust of their ancestors, the psalmist acknowledges the faithfulness of God throughout generations. This recognition encourages the current generation to also put their trust in God.

God’s Deliverance: The psalmist affirms that those who trusted in God were not disappointed; they experienced His deliverance. This highlights the faithfulness and reliability of God throughout history. The psalmist draws upon this historical evidence to express confidence in God’s ability to deliver and rescue him in his present situation.

  • Messianic Implications: While this verse primarily focuses on trust and deliverance, in the broader context of Psalm 22, it also points to Jesus Christ. The sufferings and prayers expressed in this psalm find their ultimate fulfillment in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus fully trusted in God the Father and was ultimately delivered through His resurrection, providing salvation for all who trust in Him.
