Psalms 22:3

Listen to this article

“But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.”

Context:Psalm 22 is a well-known psalm attributed to King David. It is often referred to as the “Psalm of the Cross” or the “Crucifixion Psalm” because of its striking resemblance to the sufferings of Jesus Christ on the cross. This psalm starts with a lamentation and later transitions into a declaration of trust and praise.

“But thou art holy”: In this phrase, the psalmist acknowledges the holiness of God. Despite the challenging circumstances described earlier in the psalm, the psalmist affirms God’s character as holy. It emphasises that even in times of distress, God remains perfect and righteous.

“O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel”: Here, the psalmist declares that God dwells or inhabits the praises of Israel. This statement implies that God is present and actively involved in the praises offered by His people. It suggests that when Israel praises God, He manifests His presence and power among them.

Worship and God’s presence:This verse highlights the connection between worship, praise, and the presence of God. God is not limited by space or time, but He chooses to manifest His presence in response to the praises of His people. When we worship God in spirit and truth, offering our heartfelt praise and adoration, God draws near and makes His presence known.

The significance for believers:As believers, we can draw encouragement and inspiration from this verse. It reminds us of the power and impact of genuine worship and praise. Our praises have the potential to attract the presence of God into our lives and circumstances, bringing comfort, guidance, and deliverance.

Application:Psalm 22:3 encourages us to cultivate a lifestyle of worship and praise. We should seek to honour God with our words, actions, and attitudes, acknowledging His holiness and expressing our gratitude and adoration. When we offer heartfelt praises to God, not only in times of joy but also in times of difficulty, we invite His presence to dwell among us and transform our situations.

Overall, Psalm 22:3 reminds us of God’s holiness and the connection between worship, praise, and His manifest presence. It encourages us to cultivate a lifestyle of worship and offers assurance that God is attentive to the praises of His people.
