Psalms 22:9

Listen to this article

“But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts.”

Context of Psalm 22:Psalm 22 is a psalm of David and is considered to be a Messianic psalm, meaning it foreshadows the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. It is a profound expression of anguish, followed by trust in God’s deliverance. The psalm describes the intense suffering and distress of the psalmist, which are ultimately fulfilled in Jesus’ crucifixion.

  • Significance of verse 9:In verse 9, the psalmist acknowledges God as the one who brought them forth from the womb and instilled hope from infancy. It highlights the psalmist’s deep sense of reliance on God and the intimate relationship formed from the earliest stages of life.
  • Symbolism and Spiritual Meaning:This verse carries a symbolic and spiritual significance, particularly when viewed in light of Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, Jesus is often referred to as the Son of David, connecting him to the lineage of King David. As such, this verse foreshadows the divine nature of Jesus and his unique relationship with God the Father. Jesus’ birth was miraculous, with the Holy Spirit conceiving him in the womb of the Virgin Mary. God, the Creator, was intimately involved in Jesus’ formation and development. Just as God guided and protected the psalmist from infancy, God’s hand was upon Jesus from the moment of conception. The verse emphasizes the divinely ordained nature of Jesus’ birth and the fulfilment of God’s plan for salvation.
  • Application to Believers:As believers, we can draw encouragement and insight from this verse. It reminds us that God is intimately involved in our lives from the very beginning. He is the one who forms us, sustains us, and provides hope in all circumstances. This verse also highlights the importance of recognising and acknowledging God’s hand in our lives. Just as the psalmist attributed their existence and hope to God, we should cultivate a deep sense of gratitude and reliance on God for our lives, both physical and spiritual. Furthermore, this verse reminds us of the unique relationship we have with God through Jesus Christ. As followers of Jesus, we are adopted into God’s family and can approach Him with confidence, knowing that He cares for us deeply.
