Psalms 22:17

Posted on 18 May at 14:12
Listen to this article

“I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.”

Context:Psalm 22 is attributed to King David and is considered a Messianic psalm. It contains both personal lamentation and prophetic elements that point to the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

  • Personal Suffering:In this verse, the psalmist describes a state of severe physical affliction. The phrase “I may tell all my bones” signifies extreme distress and agony. It suggests that the speaker’s body has been so emaciated and weakened that the individual can count all their bones. This vivid image portrays a sense of profound suffering and vulnerability.
  • Prophetic Fulfillment:Psalm 22 is highly prophetic and provides a foretelling of the crucifixion experience of Jesus Christ. Many elements described in this psalm find remarkable fulfillment in the life and death of Jesus. The New Testament Gospel accounts draw parallels to various verses in Psalm 22, indicating their significance in the fulfillment of Messianic prophecies.
  • Crucifixion of Jesus:When Jesus was crucified, His body was stretched out on the cross, causing His bones to be visible and countable. The description of the psalmist’s bones being visible aligns with the piercing and suffering experienced by Jesus during His crucifixion. This verse beautifully captures the physical anguish and torment endured by Jesus for the salvation of humanity.
  • Spiritual Significance:Beyond the physical pain, this verse also holds spiritual significance. Jesus’ crucifixion was not only a means of physical torture but also a profound act of love and redemption. By enduring such agony, Jesus provided a way for humanity to be reconciled with God, offering forgiveness and eternal salvation to all who believe in Him.
  • Application:Psalm 22:17 serves as a reminder of the immense suffering and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It prompts us to reflect on the depth of His love for us and the extent to which He was willing to go to redeem humanity. It also encourages believers to approach their own sufferings with faith, knowing that Jesus understands their pain and offers comfort and hope in all circumstances.
