For dogges haue compassed me: the assembly of the wicked haue inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feete. Psalms 22:16 (KJV)

Context of Psalm 22: Psalm 22 is a Messianic psalm attributed to King David. It is known for its prophetic nature, as it contains several verses that are directly applicable to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The psalm begins with a cry of distress but transitions into a declaration of trust and praise for God’s faithfulness.

Symbolism in Psalm 22:16:

  • a. “Dogs have compassed me”: The term “dogs” is used metaphorically to represent enemies or wicked people who surround and threaten the psalmist. In this context it refers to the adversaries and persecutors of Jesus during His crucifixion.
  • b. “The assembly of the wicked have enclosed me”: This phrase emphasizes the gathering of evildoers who have encircled the psalmist or Jesus, signifying the hostile atmosphere in which the suffering takes place.
  • c. “They pierced my hands and my feet”: This clause has remarkable prophetic significance, describing the piercing of hands and feet as a foreshadowing of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, where He was nailed to the cross with nails penetrating His hands and feet.

Messianic significance: Psalm 22:16 is one of the verses in this psalm that is linked to Jesus’ crucifixion. The New Testament writers reference Psalm 22 in relation to the crucifixion, though Matthew specifically quotes Psalm 22:1 (“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”) and Psalm 22:18 (see Matthew 27:46) and does not cite verse 16 directly.

Theological insights:

  • a. Prophecy fulfilled: The verse underscores the prophetic nature of the Psalms and how they foreshadowed Jesus’ redemptive work on the cross, highlighting the accuracy and divine inspiration of Scripture.
  • b. Suffering and redemption: Psalm 22 portrays a vivid picture of suffering, despair, and abandonment, yet it ultimately leads to hope, restoration, and victory. The suffering of Jesus on the cross was an essential part of God’s plan for redemption and the forgiveness of sins.
  • c. Identification with human suffering: Jesus, the Son of God, willingly identified Himself with the sufferings of humanity. He experienced physical pain, rejection, and the weight of sin, allowing Him to empathize with our struggles and provide salvation.
  • d. Triumph over evil: Though the psalmist (David) and Jesus faced tremendous opposition, their ultimate victory over the wicked was accomplished through God’s intervention. This verse reminds believers that even in the midst of trials, God’s purposes will prevail.
