Listen to this article

“Consider mine enemies; for they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred.”

Psalm 25:19 (KJV) says: “Consider mine enemies; for they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred.”

Context of Psalm 25:Psalm 25 is attributed to King David, and it is a heartfelt prayer and expression of trust in God. The psalm is characterised by David’s plea for guidance, forgiveness, and protection from his enemies. It reflects the challenges and difficulties David faced during his reign as king, as well as his reliance on God’s faithfulness and mercy.

Understanding Psalm 25:19:

In verse 19, David brings his enemies before God and asks Him to consider them. David acknowledges the multitude of his enemies, emphasising that there are many who hate him with cruel hatred. This verse highlights the intensity of the opposition David faced. It reveals the anguish David felt as he experienced the hostility and animosity directed towards him.

Lessons from Psalm 25:19:

  • Recognition of adversaries:David acknowledges the existence of his enemies and does not shy away from discussing their cruelty. This demonstrates the importance of acknowledging and addressing challenges and adversities in our lives. While not all enemies are physical, we may face opposition, criticism, or spiritual battles. Like David, it is essential to confront them honestly, seeking God’s intervention and guidance.
  • Trusting God amidst hostility:Despite the intensity of the hatred David faced, he does not lose faith in God. Throughout the psalm, David expresses his trust in God’s unfailing love, mercy, and righteousness. In the face of opposition, we can learn from David’s example and trust that God is our ultimate protector and vindicator. Even when surrounded by enemies, our hope remains in the Lord.
  • Seeking God’s perspective:By asking God to “consider mine enemies,” David invites God to examine the situation from His divine perspective. This indicates David’s desire for justice and vindication to come from God rather than taking matters into his own hands. Similarly, when we face adversaries, it is essential to seek God’s wisdom, discernment, and guidance. Trusting in God’s sovereignty allows us to relinquish our desire for revenge and place our confidence in His perfect justice.

Application to our lives:

Psalm 25:19 reminds us that we may face opposition, hostility, or enemies in various forms throughout our lives. However, we can follow David’s example by entrusting our circumstances to God and seeking His guidance. When confronted with enemies or challenges, we should approach God with honesty, pouring out our concerns before Him. Through prayer and trust, we can find solace and strength in knowing that God is aware of our situation and is our ultimate defender.

Overall, Psalm 25:19 encourages us to bring our enemies and challenges before God, trusting in His wisdom and justice. It reminds us that even in the face of cruelty, God’s presence and protection are with us, offering comfort and strength.
