Psalms 25:19

Consider mine enemies; for they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred.

Psalms 25:19 (KJV)

Psalm 25 is a prayer of King David, who asks God for guidance, forgiveness, and protection. The psalm reflects the hardships David faced during his reign and his deep trust in God’s faithfulness and mercy. In verse 19, David brings his enemies before God, asking Him to consider them. He describes them as many and says they hate him with cruel hatred. This verse shows the intensity of the opposition David experienced and the anguish it caused him. The broader context of the psalm includes David’s pleas for deliverance and his reliance on God’s covenant love.

The word “consider” means to look at, pay attention to, or take notice of. David is not asking God to learn something new, but to act on what He already sees. David emphasizes two things about his enemies: their number and the cruelty of their hatred. The phrase “cruel hatred” suggests violence and injustice, not mere dislike. This language points to a spiritual battle, where David faces not only physical adversaries but also opposition that is vehement and hostile. David’s words are honest and direct. He does not hide his pain or pretend that his situation is easy.

David’s plea fits a pattern found in other psalms where he asks God to see his troubles and respond. In Psalm 25, this request is part of a larger prayer for deliverance and guidance. The verse also points to the truth that God is aware of the suffering of His people and is a refuge in times of trouble. David’s trust in God’s justice is clear: he brings his case to God rather than taking revenge himself. This reflects a consistent biblical theme of entrusting judgment to God, who sees all and acts rightly.

Believers today may face opposition, criticism, or spiritual battles. Like David, we can bring these struggles honestly to God. We do not need to pretend that our enemies are not real or that their hatred does not hurt. Instead, we can ask God to see our situation and act. This means trusting God’s wisdom and timing, and letting go of the desire for revenge. We can pray for God’s guidance and protection, knowing that He is our ultimate defender. When we face many opponents or cruel words, we can remember that God sees the full picture and will respond in His perfect way.

Psalm 25:19 encourages us to be honest with God about our difficulties. It reminds us that God is not distant or unaware. He sees the cruelty we face and cares for us. When we feel surrounded by opposition, we can follow David’s example and pour out our hearts to God. In prayer, we find comfort and strength, and we learn to wait on God’s perfect justice. Even when enemies are many and their hatred is cruel, God’s presence and protection remain with us. We can rest in the assurance that He who sees our trials will also be our refuge and deliverer.
