Psalms 29:5

The voice of the Lord breaketh the cedars; yea, the Lord breaketh the cedars of Lebanon.

Psalms 29:5 (KJV)

Psalm 29 is a hymn of praise attributed to King David, celebrating the glory and majesty of God’s voice in the midst of a storm. The psalm opens by calling the “mighty ones” to ascribe glory and strength to the Lord, establishing a tone of worship and awe. It then describes the voice of the Lord as a forceful presence that manifests through various natural elements, including waters, thunder, and wind.

In verse 5, the psalmist uses the metaphor of the Lord breaking the cedars of Lebanon to emphasize the power and authority of God’s voice. Cedars of Lebanon were renowned in the ancient world for their strength, durability, and size, often used in construction and revered as symbols of grandeur and majesty. By stating that the Lord’s voice breaks these mighty cedars, the psalmist underscores the unparalleled strength and supremacy of God. The repetition, “yea, the Lord breaketh the cedars of Lebanon,” intensifies the declaration, leaving no doubt about the source of this power.

Lebanon itself is a mountain region north of Judea, named for the whiteness of its snow-covered peaks and pale earth. This geographical detail grounds the poetic imagery in a real, known place, emphasizing the tangible power of God. Thunder can indeed shatter the tallest and strongest trees, making the image both vivid and credible to the original audience.

As believers, this verse serves as a reminder of the unmatched power of God and the reverence we should have for Him. It encourages us to recognize that God’s voice has the power to bring down any obstacle or challenge we may face. No matter how strong our difficulties may seem, we can trust in the strength and sovereignty of God to overcome them. It also invites us to approach God with humility, acknowledging His authority and surrendering our own strength and plans before Him, relying on His voice and guidance, knowing that He is capable of breaking through any situation and working things out for our good.

Psalm 29:5 magnifies the strength and authority of the Lord’s voice, symbolized by the breaking of the cedars of Lebanon. It calls us to respond with reverence and praise, recognizing that the same voice that shatters mighty trees is at work in our lives, inviting us to trust in His power and submit to His authority.
