Psalms 29:1
Giue vnto the Lord (O ye mighty) giue vnto the Lord glory and strength. Psalms 29:1 (KJV)
Psalm 29 is attributed to David and functions as a hymn of praise that highlights God’s power as displayed in the natural world, especially a thunderstorm. The opening call, “Give unto the Lord, O ye mighty, give unto the Lord glory and strength,” serves as an invitation to worship, honor, and praise the Almighty.
Giving unto the Lord – The psalmist exhorts the worshiper to offer glory and strength to God. This act acknowledges that all honor and power belong to Him alone. To give unto the Lord is to recognize His greatness and to ascribe to Him the attributes that rightfully belong to Him.
Addressing the mighty – The term “mighty” (Hebrew gibborim) is understood by scholars to refer to “sons of the mighty” or divine beings, often interpreted as angels or members of the heavenly assembly. By calling these beings to give glory, the psalmist underscores that even the highest created beings are called to recognize God’s supreme authority over all creation.
The glory of the Lord – Glory denotes radiant splendor, majesty, and honor. Declaring God’s glory means proclaiming His holiness, love, wisdom, and power. It is an act of magnifying His name and celebrating His character.
The strength of the Lord – Strength signifies power, might, and authority. The psalmist urges the mighty to attribute any strength they possess to the Lord, acknowledging that true power originates from Him. This recognition leads believers to surrender their own abilities and attribute achievements to God’s enabling hand.
Application
- Worship and praise: Believers are encouraged to express adoration, gratitude, and awe for who God is and what He has done.
- Humility before God: Regardless of status or power, all are called to humble themselves before the Lord, acknowledging His supreme authority.
- Recognizing God’s strength: Understanding that any personal strength is derived from God fosters dependence on Him and a desire for His empowerment.
- Trusting in sovereignty: By giving glory and strength to the Lord, believers affirm trust in His sovereign rule over every aspect of life, submitting plans to His will and relying on His guidance.
Psalm 29:1 thus reminds the faithful to honor and praise God, to recognize His glory and strength, and to surrender to His will. Through sincere worship and humility, believers experience His power and find true strength in Him.
