Psalms 28:5

Posted on 18 May at 11:25

Because they regard not the workes of the Lord, nor the operation of his hands, he shal destroy them, and not build them vp. Psalms 28:5 (KJV)

Psalm 28 is a prayer of David, expressing his plea to God for help and protection against his enemies. In this context David seeks the Lord’s intervention and deliverance from those who do evil. The specific verse, Psalm 28:5, highlights the failure of certain individuals to recognize and appreciate the works of the LORD and the operation of His hands. It points to a group of people who are indifferent or dismissive of God’s actions in the world and His involvement in their lives, overlooking His power, sovereignty, and the miraculous deeds He performs.

The verse also emphasizes that these individuals do not consider “the operation of his hands,” implying that they ignore God’s creative and providential actions, the intricate details of His creation, the signs of His presence, and the evidence of His involvement in the world.

Consequences of this disregard are warned in the verse: those who neglect God’s works will be destroyed and not built up. While the text does not elaborate further, many readers understand this as a judgment that deprives the ungrateful of God’s blessings, protection, and favor, leaving them to face the results of their attitudes.

Lessons for us emerge clearly:

  • a. Recognition and gratitude – We must recognize and appreciate the works of the LORD, being observant of His hand at work in our lives and the world, and cultivate a heart of gratitude for His provision, protection, and blessings.
  • b. Awareness of God’s presence – Cultivating an awareness of God’s presence deepens our relationship with Him, fostering greater trust and dependence as we remain mindful of His guidance.
  • c. Consequences of neglect – The verse reminds us that disregarding God’s works and His operation can lead to negative consequences; therefore we should take God seriously and not take His presence lightly.
  • d. Seeking God’s favor – To avoid being counted among those who neglect God, we should actively seek His favor by aligning our lives with His will, studying His Word, praying, and living in obedience to Him.
