Psalms 29:9

The voice of the Lord maketh the hinds to calve, and discovereth the forests: and in his temple doth every one speak of his glory.

Psalms 29:9 (KJV)

Psalm 29 is a psalm of David that celebrates the power and majesty of God as displayed in a thunderstorm. The psalm repeatedly emphasizes “the voice of the LORD,” mentioned seven times, symbolizing His authority and sovereignty over creation. In this verse, that voice acts upon the natural world, showing that God’s power reaches both the weak and the strong.

The voice of the LORD makes hinds calve. Hinds are female deer, known for their timidity and the difficulty of giving birth. This image shows that God’s voice brings forth life even in the most delicate and fearful of creatures. The same voice “discovereth the forests,” meaning it strips or lays bare the woodlands. This demonstrates that God’s power extends over the strong and the weak alike, revealing what is hidden. The verse concludes with the response of creation: “in his temple doth every one speak of his glory.” The proper response to God’s majestic power is worship, as everyone in His temple declares His glory.

The surrounding verses reinforce this theme. Verse 10 declares that “the LORD sitteth upon the flood; yea, the LORD sitteth King for ever,” and verse 11 promises that “the LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.” These verses connect God’s sovereign power over creation with His care for His people, offering strength and peace.

This verse encourages believers to recognize God’s power in the natural world and to respond with worship. The same powerful voice that controls creation also gives strength and peace to His people. When we see the power of God in nature, we are reminded to trust Him with the difficult and painful processes of life, knowing that His voice can bring forth life and reveal His glory.

Consider the power of God’s voice in your own life. Just as it causes hinds to calve and strips the forests, it can bring new life and reveal what is hidden. Respond by speaking of His glory, joining the worship in His temple, and trusting that His voice brings strength and peace.
