Psalms 31:15

My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.

Psalms 31:15 (KJV)

Psalm 31 is a prayer of trust in God’s protection. David wrote it during severe distress, possibly while fleeing from Saul or during Absalom’s rebellion. In this verse, he acknowledges that his life and all its events are under God’s control, even as he faces enemies.

The verse has two parts: a confident declaration and a desperate plea. The declaration, “My times are in thy hand,” affirms God’s absolute sovereignty over every season—prosperity and adversity, life and death. David’s life is not controlled by enemies, fate, or chance, but by the covenant God. This is not passive fatalism but active trust that God’s timing and purposes are good.

The plea, “deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me,” flows from that trust. Because God holds all times, He is able to rescue from those who pursue. The Hebrew word for “hand” is used for both God’s sovereign control and the oppressive power of enemies, creating a deliberate contrast. David’s confidence rests not in his own strength but in God’s covenant faithfulness.

This verse models a biblical pattern: acknowledging God’s control is the foundation for asking His intervention. The broader context of Psalm 31 shows David moving from lament to praise, demonstrating that trust in God’s hand leads to hope. The request for deliverance is not a lack of faith but an expression of it, as prayer is the practical outworking of trust.

  • Trusting God’s timing: Like David, recognize that our times are in God’s hands. This means acknowledging His control and trusting His perfect timing for every situation. We may not always understand why things happen, but we can have confidence that God’s timing is perfect.

  • Seeking God’s deliverance: Just as David sought deliverance, we should turn to God in trouble. We can approach Him with our concerns, knowing He is our ultimate protector and defender. God is attentive to our prayers and able to deliver us from adversaries, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual.

  • Trusting in God’s faithfulness: Reflecting on David’s trust, we can draw strength from our own experiences of God’s provision. As we remember how God has been faithful in the past, it builds our confidence in His ability to deliver us in present and future challenges.

This verse teaches that believers can face threats with peace because their ultimate security is in God’s hands, not in circumstances. It encourages us to surrender our entire life timeline to God, finding rest in His providence even when enemies seem to prevail. It also provides a model for prayer in times of persecution: first affirm God’s control, then make your request known. God’s hand is both a place of safety and a source of deliverance.
