Psalms 31:18

Listen to this article

“Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.”

Context:Psalm 31 is a psalm of trust and confidence in God’s protection. David expresses his deep distress and seeks refuge in the Lord. He acknowledges God as his rock, fortress, and deliverer. Throughout the psalm, David appeals to God for help, expressing his trust in God’s unfailing love and faithfulness.

Let the lying lips be put to silence:David starts verse 18 with a plea for God to intervene against those who speak falsehood and deceit. Lying lips refer to those who slander, gossip, or spread false accusations against the righteous. David desires for their deceptive tongues to be stilled and their words to be proven false. This prayer reveals David’s longing for justice and for the truth to prevail.

Which speak grievous things:The lying lips mentioned by David are not merely spreading minor falsehoods but uttering grievous things. These may include malicious rumors, false testimony, or harmful words that aim to undermine the character or integrity of the righteous. David desires that these hurtful words be silenced and discredited.

Proudly and contemptuously against the righteous:David highlights the attitude of those who speak against the righteous. Their speech is marked by pride and contempt. They not only express false accusations but do so with arrogance and disdain towards the righteous. David recognizes the need for these prideful individuals to be silenced and held accountable for their actions.

Application:Seeking justice:This verse encourages believers to seek justice and truth in the face of slander or false accusations. Just as David appealed to God for vindication, we can bring our concerns to the Lord, trusting in His righteous judgment.

Guarding our speech:As followers of God, we should be cautious about the words we speak. Let us avoid engaging in false witness, gossip, or slander. Instead, let our words be filled with love, kindness, and truth.

Trusting God’s vindication:David’s prayer reflects his confidence that God will silence the lying lips. Similarly, we can trust in God’s faithfulness to protect and defend us. Even when we face false accusations or unjust treatment, we can find solace in the knowledge that God sees all things and will ultimately bring about justice.
