Listen to this article

“They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.”

Context of Psalm 34:Psalm 34 is attributed to David, and it is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving to God. It was composed during a period when David was on the run from King Saul, seeking refuge among the Philistines. In this particular psalm, David reflects on his experiences and offers encouragement to others who are facing difficulties.

“They looked unto him”: The phrase “They looked unto him” indicates that those who are mentioned in this verse turned their gaze or directed their attention toward God. In times of trouble, they sought God for help, guidance, and deliverance. It is an act of faith and trust in God, acknowledging that He is the source of their strength and salvation.

“And were lightened”: The phrase “and were lightened” signifies that as they looked to God, their burdens were lifted, and their spirits were enlightened. When people turn to God with their troubles, worries, and fears, He provides them with comfort, peace, and hope. God’s presence and intervention bring light into their lives, dispelling darkness and illuminating their path.

“And their faces were not ashamed”: The phrase “and their faces were not ashamed” implies that those who trusted in God were not put to shame or disappointed. When people place their hope and confidence in God, they can have assurance that He will come through for them. God’s faithfulness and provision bring honor and dignity to His followers, protecting them from shame and reproach.

Application and Lessons:

  • Trust in God:This verse encourages us to place our trust in God and turn to Him in times of need. He is the one who can bring light into our darkness and lift our burdens.
  • Seeking God’s face:The verse emphasizes the importance of seeking God’s face and looking to Him as our source of strength and guidance. It reminds us that God is attentive to our prayers and desires to lighten our hearts.
  • Freedom from shame:When we trust in God and seek Him, we can find freedom from shame and disappointment. God’s faithfulness ensures that He will not let us down, and we can confidently rely on Him.
