Psalms 34:6

This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

Psalms 34:6 (KJV)

Psalm 34 is a psalm of praise written by David after he escaped from Abimelech, likely Achish, king of Gath, by pretending to be insane (1 Samuel 21:10-15). David was fleeing from King Saul, and this psalm gives thanks for God’s faithful deliverance.

The “poor man” in this verse is David himself. Although he was a king, he recognized his deep need before God. The word “poor” here points not mainly to money but to spiritual lowliness and affliction. David cried out to the Lord with an earnest, heartfelt plea, and God heard him. The Lord’s response was complete: He saved David out of all his troubles. This is a personal testimony, but it also serves as an example for every humble believer. The psalmist’s experience becomes a model for all who are lowly in spirit: cry out to the Lord, trust in His deliverance, and testify to His goodness.

This verse shows a pattern seen throughout Scripture: God’s people are often poor and afflicted, and in their trouble they cry to Him for help. The psalmist’s experience foreshadows the ultimate deliverance through Christ, who became poor for our sake and cried out to the Father in His distress and was heard (Hebrews 5:7). God’s covenant faithfulness to those who fear Him is also seen in the following verses, Psalm 34:7 and 34:9. The verse also points to the blessedness of those who take refuge in Him (Psalm 34:8).

This verse encourages believers to cry out to the Lord in times of trouble. It reminds us that God is attentive to the cries of the needy and is able to save completely. We may not always see deliverance in the way or time we expect, but God is faithful. We should come before Him with humility, recognizing our dependence on Him regardless of our earthly status.

  • Crying out to God builds an intimate relationship with Him, who seeks those who call on Him.

  • God hears the prayers of the humble and delivers them from every trouble.

  • Humility and dependence on God are essential, no matter our position in life.

Psalm 34:6 is a powerful reminder of God’s faithfulness to all who call upon Him. It invites us to bring our troubles to God in humble prayer, confident that He hears and saves. Like David, we can testify that the Lord delivers His people out of all their troubles, and we can find comfort in His attentive care.
