Psalms 34:5
They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.

Context
Psalm 34 is a song of praise from David, written while he fled from King Saul and stayed among the Philistines. In verse 4, David says he sought the Lord and was heard and delivered from all his fears. Verse 5 then speaks of all who look to God in the same way. This psalm encourages others facing difficulties to trust in God’s deliverance.
Meaning
“They looked unto him” means turning the heart and mind toward God in trouble, seeking help and deliverance. The Hebrew verb suggests a continuous or repeated looking, not a single glance. This is an act of faith, acknowledging God as the source of strength and salvation. It is a deliberate turning of one’s attention to God, especially in distress.
“And were lightened” means their faces became radiant with joy and divine favor. The Targum renders it “their faces were enlightened,” and Jewish commentators see the face shining in contrast to shame. As they looked to God, their burdens lifted and their spirits brightened. God’s presence brings light into darkness and illuminates the path ahead.
“And their faces were not ashamed” promises that those who trust God will not be disappointed. Their hope will not be in vain. God’s faithfulness brings honor and dignity, protecting them from shame and reproach. This is a general truth about God’s faithfulness to those who trust Him.
Biblical connections
The New Testament connects this promise to the gospel. Romans 10:11 says that whoever believes in Christ will not be ashamed. The same confidence in God that David describes finds its fullest expression in faith in Jesus. This Old Testament promise is fulfilled in the gospel.
Application
Trust God in times of need. He is the one who can lift burdens and bring light into darkness.
Seek God’s face continually, not just in crisis. He is attentive to prayer and desires to lighten the heart.
