Psalms 34:8
“O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.”
Context:The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic and lyrical songs written by various authors, including King David. Psalm 34 is attributed to David, and it is considered a psalm of thanksgiving and praise. It was composed during a difficult time in David’s life when he was on the run from King Saul.
“O taste and see”: This phrase is a metaphorical invitation to experience God’s goodness firsthand. Just as we taste food to know its flavour, David encourages people to personally encounter and experience God’s goodness. It implies that true knowledge of God’s goodness comes through personal relationship and experience rather than mere intellectual understanding.
“The LORD is good”: Here, David declares the goodness of the LORD. God’s goodness refers to His moral excellence, kindness, compassion, and faithfulness. It is a fundamental attribute of God’s character. David’s personal experiences with God’s deliverance and provision in challenging situations lead him to affirm the goodness of the LORD.
“Blessed is the man that trusteth in him”: David emphasizes the blessedness or happiness of those who trust in the LORD. Trusting in God involves relying on Him, acknowledging His sovereignty, and having confidence in His character and promises. David experienced firsthand the blessings that come from trusting in God, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
Key lessons from Psalm 34:8:
- a) Personal experience: The verse encourages us to seek a personal encounter with God, not just intellectual knowledge about Him. We can experience God’s goodness through prayer, worship, studying His Word, and reflecting on His faithfulness in our lives.
- b) God’s goodness: Recognising and affirming the goodness of God is important for our faith. It reminds us of His loving nature, His provision, and His faithfulness. It strengthens our trust in Him, knowing that He is always working for our good.
- c) Blessings of trust: Trusting in the LORD leads to blessings and happiness. When we place our confidence in Him, we can experience His guidance, protection, and provision. Trusting in God involves surrendering our worries, fears, and anxieties to Him, knowing that He is in control.
In summary, Psalm 34:8 invites us to taste and experience God’s goodness for ourselves. It emphasises the importance of personal relationship, trust, and recognising God’s faithfulness in our lives. By trusting in Him, we can experience blessings and find happiness in our walk with the Lord.
