Psalms 34:8
O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
Psalms 34:8 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 34 is a thanksgiving psalm attributed to David. He wrote it after a dangerous episode while fleeing from King Saul, when he found refuge among the Philistines (1 Samuel 21:10-15). That historical moment shaped David’s testimony: he had personally known God’s protection, and now he invites others to share in that same goodness.
Meaning
“O taste and see” is a metaphor drawn from eating. Just as tasting food reveals its flavor, David urges people to personally encounter God’s goodness. This is not about mere intellectual knowledge; it is about a real, firsthand relationship with God. The word “taste” suggests something intimate and experiential, like sampling food to know its quality.
“The LORD is good” declares a central truth about God’s character. His goodness includes moral excellence, kindness, compassion, and faithfulness. David’s own experiences of deliverance and provision led him to affirm this truth. God’s goodness is not distant or abstract; it is active and available to those who seek Him.
“Blessed is the man that trusteth in him” shows the result of trusting God. To trust means to rely on Him, acknowledge His sovereignty, and have confidence in His promises. This trust brings happiness and safety, much like taking refuge in a strong shelter. The second half of the verse connects trust with blessing, showing that reliance on God leads to a secure and joyful life.
Biblical connections
Trusting in the Lord is closely linked to taking refuge in Him. Other translations render this phrase as “happy are those who take refuge in him,” which reinforces the idea of safety and protection. This connection appears throughout the Psalms, where God is described as a shield and a fortress for those who rely on Him.
Application
This verse encourages us to seek a personal encounter with God, not just to know about Him. We can taste His goodness through prayer, worship, reading Scripture, and reflecting on His faithfulness in our lives. Recognising God’s goodness strengthens our trust, reminding us that He is always working for our good.
Trusting in the Lord leads to blessings and happiness. When we place our confidence in Him, we experience His guidance, protection, and provision. This trust involves surrendering our worries, fears, and anxieties to Him, knowing that He is in control. As we trust, we find the safety and joy that come from resting in His care.
Reflection
Psalm 34:8 invites us to taste and experience God’s goodness for ourselves. It emphasises the importance of personal relationship, trust, and recognising God’s faithfulness. By trusting in Him, we can experience blessings and find true happiness in our walk with the Lord.
