Psalms 34:20

He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.

Psalms 34:20 (KJV)

Psalm 34 is a thanksgiving song by David after he escaped danger by pretending to be insane before Abimelech, king of Gath. In this psalm, David teaches the righteous to trust in the Lord, who hears their cries and delivers them. The immediate context, verse 19, says that the righteous face many afflictions, but the Lord delivers them from all. Verse 20 then shows the completeness of that deliverance: God preserves even the bones of His servant, so that not one is broken.

The Hebrew word translated “keepeth” means to guard, watch over, or preserve. The verse promises that God guards all the bones of the righteous, so that not one is broken. This is a poetic picture of complete protection, showing that the Lord cares for every part of His people. It is not an absolute guarantee that no believer will ever suffer a broken bone. Rather, it is a vivid way of saying that God’s care is thorough and personal.

This verse is a Messianic prophecy fulfilled in Jesus Christ. John 19:31-36 records that when the soldiers came to break the legs of those crucified, they did not break Jesus’ legs because He was already dead. John explicitly cites Psalm 34:20 as fulfilled in this event, noting that the Scripture says, “A bone of him shall not be broken” (John 19:36). This connection is also rooted in the Passover lamb, whose bones were not to be broken (Exodus 12:46). Jesus, as the true Passover Lamb, fulfills this requirement, showing His sacrifice is perfect and complete.

For believers, this verse offers assurance of God’s sovereign care. It does not promise that we will never suffer physical harm, but it assures us that God is with us in every trial, guarding and preserving us. We can trust Him to protect us spiritually and to bring us through difficulties. This truth gives us confidence in times of suffering, knowing that God’s deliverance is certain and His protection extends to every part of our lives.

When we face hardship, we can remember that God sees our suffering and is actively involved in our lives. Just as He preserved Jesus, He watches over His children. This truth encourages us to remain steadfast in faith, knowing that our lives are safe in His hands. We can rest in the security found in Christ, who is the perfect fulfillment of God’s preserving power.
